Omar Constanzo is one of the city’s last shoemakers. He inherited the craft from his father, whom he remembers with devotion despite his relentless methods. Whenever Omar finished repairing a shoe, his father would make him believe the work was flawed, forcing him to start all over again—even when the repair was flawless.
No one has ever expressed a desire to learn how to fix shoes from him, but he isn’t interested in teaching, either. He told me that the knowledge ends with him. The craft is something strictly between him and his father.
